I am from Lafayette, Indiana and I am currently finishing up my last term at the Excel Center. I dropped out of high school at a young age and was a teen mom who worked quite often. I started going back to school—at the Excel Center—in August of 2022 and started at KLR in August of 2023. I had been trying to figure out which certification I was most interested in and after learning a little more about each option that the Excel Center had to offer, I was mostly intrigued by the Certified Pharm Tech course. I was very nervous about this class because I was told it was A LOT of work and the first set of assignments seemed a bit overwhelming but once I got them all completed and kept up on my assignments I knew that’s all it would take. The most important things to me through this course was showing up, studying & staying caught up on my assignments, and communicating with my instructor. My instructor, Mr. Brent was very thorough and made sure we took notes on the most important things so we could make sure we studied it! You could really tell that Mr. Brent wanted to see us all succeed and he was always willing to go above and beyond to find out answers to our questions that he wasn’t 100% sure about. My coach, Miss Naomi, was also very helpful throughout this term. I tend to get very anxious and ask a lot of questions to make sure I am prepared and Miss Naomi was very responsive and eager to help. I had some smaller interactions with other members of the KLR staff/team and they were all very supportive and encouraging and that really helped boost my confidence!! Taking a lot of notes during class and highlighting the more important things definitely helped me study as well as the flash cards that we made before we had orientation. I had also added to my flash cards and made some for things that I had a hard time remembering. I also really enjoyed the fun environment of the class and getting to learn a lot of new things. Taking this course was definitely a special experience for me because not only was everyone so amazing and uplifting but as someone who has always worked in food service I am extremely proud to say that KLR, as well as the Excel Center has helped me achieve something so much greater. I will have my high school diploma, my Pharm Tech license AND my certification all completed within the next few weeks. I am already certified and have received a job offer from IU health. I have put in my application for IU here in Lafayette and am just waiting to hear back from them. I am super excited about my next steps and definitely look forward to keeping in touch with KLR!!
